History of Cumberland River Hospital

Prior to 1965, the citizens of Clay County had to rely on one country doctor and no hospital for their healthcare needs. In 1961, the County Court started the process of establishing a hospital for Clay County. On July 24, 1961, 3.8 acres were purchased for $3,780.00 to be used for the building site. After completion of the hospital, the county had a problem locating doctors to work in Celina. In 1965, physicians Art Cardona and Billy Nesbit started practice in the new 20 bed facility. The first administrator was Mr. Lloyd Black and Eva Craig was the Director of Nurses.

As healthcare has changed, so has the hospital. Not only do we offer emergency and acute care services, the facility has expanded to include geriatric psychiatric care and home healthcare in ten counties.

Although the hospital has been through several ownership changes, it continues to serve the community with the highest possible level of healthcare. Currently, the facility is owned by Restoration Healthcare of Celina. The group is composed of physicians and business men specializing in taking at-risk small facilities and making them profitable.
